- Regatta Update July-

Following on from my note a few weeks ago I’m pleased to say we have had more success at regattas.

We have raced at Burton and Bewdley over the past 3 weeks.  Burton saw a win for the men’s VIII and IV.  The VIII won convincingly over a crew from Nottingham, it was a tougher race for the IV which was had a closely fought fight from start to finish against a crew from Pengwern with Trafford winning by 1 foot!

The juniors had some hard races in all categories, the W NOV quad got into the semi final with Georgia arriving in the nick of time to take part in the race!

Our annual trip to Bewdley saw a win on the Saturday for Andy Sykes and Simon Weeks at Mas C winning convincingly.  With the Mixed VIII and IM3 IV getting into the finals of both events which was an excellent achievement, competitive races as well for the IM2 IV & VIII, Freya and Nuala in singles and doubles.

Saturday turned out to be the warm up for the Sunday races which saw a win for Nuala and Freya in the WNOV 2x and a win for men’s IM2 VIII which is the first win for the club in this category.  The Mixed IV also reached the final but were piped at the post!

This weekend we are sending 18 entries to Warrington regatta, including a first race for Henry Law Vet E 1x.  The final regatta will be Hollingworth Lake early September if there is enough water in the lake!

Well done to everyone so far this season and good luck this weekend.

- Regatta Update June-

Just thought I would give you a quick update on how the regatta season has started.

So far we have competed at 5 regatta’s Shrewsbury, Northwich, Trentham, East Midlands and National Masters.

Shrewsbury;

Off to a great start for the season with a win for the Nov 4+ Mark Smith, Max, Simon Porter, Dan and Helen, considering Mark and Max only completed row start last year this was a brilliant result.  Chris and Carly also got through to the final in their 2x

Northwich;

It was an impressive debut for a number of Juniors and but for a few steering issues an angry swan we might have had more than the one win.  In total we had 12 entries to this event.

The highlights of the day.

Miles getting to the final of J13 single to the delight of his family, Conners speed until he hit the bank! First win in the new boat for Ellie and Elizabeth, Bronya coming so close against J12 boys. Freya's close loss to Warrington.  A great first win of the season for Kerniuss.

Trentham;

It’s the first time the club has attended this regatta in the lovely setting of Trentham gardens, just a stone’s throw away from Stoke City’s football ground the Britannia Stadium.

It was the turn of the Novice girls 4+ this time Jill, Alva, Christine, Jo and Fi racing twice to take victory.  Chris and Carly went one better in the 2x, Kerniuss had two very close races, Simon and Andy had victory snatched away from them because of buoy! We almost had an all Trafford final in the IM3 4+ which could have been interesting.  Ben Archer won in his composite 4X+ with Queen Park High school.

East Midlands;

We dared to race again at the very windy Nottingham water sports centre, in the morning it was the turn of the VIII which won by an impressive 10 seconds well done to Elliot (student), Sam, Andy W, Dan, Simon P, Mike Howarth, Mark, Max and Helen.  It was a close race for the IM3 4+ in the afternoon who lost by under 2 seconds.  Sore heads all round Sunday morning I believe!

National Vets;

Most of you will have seen Andy Sykes and Simon Weeks training hard all winter for this event Masters C IM3 2x, all the hard work paid off when they came home with a Silver Medal.  The course is 6 lanes wide and 1000m, beaten off the start by the other 5 crews, they managed to row through 4 of them to lose by 2 secs to an impressive crew from St Ives.  Well done fellas you did us proud!

We still have a few events to go; Runcorn Junior regatta, Burton, Warrington, Bewdley and Hollingworth lake.  Kerniuss is also rowing at Henley this year via Runcorn.

Hopefully plenty more wins heading our way.

Thanks,
Andy

- Race Review - Shrewsbury Regatta 2011 -

A number of Trafford crews were in action at the annual Shrewsbury Regatta this weekend with the club's only success coming in the men's Novice Coxed Fours event.

The semi-final saw Trafford (Simon Porter, Daniel Hopkinson, Mark Smith and Max Morgan, coxed by Helen Matthews) win against a Bewdley crew by three quarters of a length, with a strong second half of the race ensuring Trafford moved comforatbly away from their opposition.

In the final, the Trafford crew faced stiff competition from home club Pengwern.  Beaten off the start, Trafford did not let this move phase them and a solid middle third of the race saw Trafford row through their opposition.  A strong finish saw Trafford hold on to win the event by half a length.

Solid training during the Spring under the watchful eye and close guidance of Simon Reeves and Lydia Birch paid dividend.  The crew had a clear race plan which they were able to successfully execute on race day.

- Trafford Rowing Club Annual Dinner 2011 -

In recent years the venue for the annual dinner has moved around a fair bit, from the Cresta Court Hotel in 2006, to Lancashire's Old Trafford Cricket Ground in 2008, the Fat Loaf in Altrincham in 2009, and Bowdon's Cinnamon Club in 2007 and 2010.  For 2011 the club took to the pistes of the Chill Factore out by the Trafford Centre.

A champagne reception was followed by three course dinner, speeches and a pool tournament!  As usual the food was of a high standard, the beers were flowing, and a good time was had by all, especially the recipient's of Trafford Rowing Club's plethora of trophies.

Many thanks to Cassi Adams and Ruth Hanbury for organising such a great night.

The winners this year's awards were as follows:

The Ken Jolley Trophy - Chris & Carly Barton

The President's Trophy - Andy Sykes

The Bridgewater Cup - Ben Archer

The Trafford Cup - Paul Little

The Bridgewater 4 - Sarah Bennett, Cassi Adams, Rhiannion Evans, Carly Barton and Patrick the cox
